Fire drill
May. 8th, 2005 05:58 pmLook, it's Kristina - the girl who never updates.
On Tuesday we had a fire drill at work. It was a rather ambitious one. We'd all received an e-mail a couple of days earlier that we should expect a fire drill in the near future. When we had just come back from our weekly meeting the alarm went off. We took our jackets and started walking to the exits. Various people ushered us in different directions telling us there was smoke on the bottom floor. (Because we were ushered we ended up taking the long way out which took at least five minutes.)
We ended up in the conference room where there was a fire escape that everyone and their sister was lined up to climb down. Someone said "If this was a real fire we'd all be dead by now."
We got out and assembled on the soccer court. It was muddy and wet and people grouped together by company. After a while the fire department arrived. They asked who was in charge and if anyone was missing. Some other people called out that Ulrika was missing and the fire men went back into the building. We stood there for about twenty minutes and chit-chatted a bit. I asked the computer department if they had any back-up, should the building be destroyed and they don't! So if the actual computers are destroyed, that's it! Someone joked that the group president was tired of the housing problems and was going to blow the building up for the insurance money. :-)
Ulrika came out eventually and told us that she and a few others had been asked to stay behind to see if anyone would miss them! Yikes! It was a good thing they were missed!
The head of the drill and some other people came and talked a bit. He said everyone were out of the building in five minutes and the fire department who got the alarm at the same time as us had arrived in seven minutes. Apparently, they're going to look over the safety protocol soon and will do another drill in a year or so to compare the results before and after the changes.
He said the most important thing is to know how to get out, who is in charge of the building and if all the members of your team have gotten out. He also told us the scenario of the fire drill:
A disgruntled customer attacked the building with a home made bomb! Lol! He said the terrorist scenario is more plausible than the electric malfunction one.
When we got back to our desks, my coffe was cold. :-(
