Summing up the Olympic Games 2006
Feb. 26th, 2006 10:49 pmOn Thursday the local Amnesty chapter had a meeting. Last meeting I promised to take over as group secretary and so they elected me. The old guy who had the position before was very relieved and I'm going over to his house on Thursday to go through the paper work and learn what to do. Don't worry, he's 79 years old and has a bad knee, plus everyone in the group knows I'm going there.
When I returned I saw the Swedish ladies curling team winning the Gold medal.
The olympics were finished today and I saw the 50 km cross country race, the ice hockey finale and the closing ceremony.
I'm not a big sports fan, but the Olympics are different. In 2000 when Malin was unemployed and I was a college student (i.e. we both had a lot of time on our hands) we saw almost every contest of the games in Sydney. During that time I learned how to bake olive bread with sour milk and Malin and I started making coffee drinks, so the Sydney games will always be connected to that, coffee drinks and taking walks in the green surroundings.
In winter Olympics Sweden has been very unfortunate. We had not taken a gold medal since 1994, but this time we took seven gold medals. Talk about a comeback! The press has been on an ecstatic high for the past two weeks.
It started with two gold medals within 30 minutes, in cross country sprint. Then followed another sprint medal and a slalom win for Anja Pärson. On Thursday was the curling match and yesterday as I was standing in the supermarket I learned that a Swedish female shooter had won the biathlon under the watchful eyes of the Swedish king. And today Sweden won the Men's Ice Hockey Finale!!
Three memories I will take with me:
The office landscape erupting into shouts when the cross country golds were won.
Learning about the biathlon gold at the supermarket yesterday.
Being in the bookstore on Thursday when the manager stood up on his chair and shouted: "All those rushing to get home to watch the semi finals can relax and take it easy. Sweden is ahead by three goals." Spontaneous applause followed.
(Yesterday I cut my hair, took a long walk, did my monthly shopping, paid my bills, did my laundry, went to Malin and watched the 2nd ESC try-outs and stayed there until I took a taxy home at one thirty.)
