General update, the Haga-man
Jun. 14th, 2006 08:19 amWhat's going on right now? Well the World Cup for once. Have only seen one game so far (Sweden's of course) but I plan on seeing all of Sweden's games. I don't know much about soccer but I like big events. :-) The city is showing Sweden's games on a big screen down at the harbour, and I plan to see at least one game there.
Our CEO has gone on his fraternity leave, which is unusual, but cute.
The weather is hot and humid. Walking to work is like walking in a sauna. My apartment is blazing hot. :-(
Thankfully, we have very good Air Conditioning at the office, so we get a respite from heat. :-)
There is a lot in the news now about the trial against the so called Haga-man. For seven years he raped and assaulted women in the city of UmeƄ until he was finally caught a couple of months ago. Thanks to DNA evidence they have linked him to those crimes. Two of the women he beat so hard that they almost died, so he is charged for attempted murder in two cases as well.
The thing that is so surprising to most people is that he was such a well-adjusted family man with no prior convictions. Even the lawyer says he has never come across such an "unusual" criminal. I read yesterday that he was the 777:th person they DNA-tested. The police says the reason why it took them so long to find him is that he was "too normal" and wasn't in the criminal records. He was finally caught when one of his friends asked the police to investigate him.
He seems to have a psychotic problem that is triggered by drinking alcohol. All his crimes were committed when he was very drunk. There is a precedence in Swedish law. In 1994 a young army recruit drank a copious amount of alcohol and shot seven people to death with his rifle. It was judged that he knew what he was doing when he started drinking, and he couldn't use being drunk as an excuse. He was convicted. This case is very interesting. More to follow.
