"Fan Fiction"
Nov. 15th, 2014 11:04 amThe 200th ep of Supernatural, titled "Fan Fiction", really lived up to the pitch "love letter to the fans."
The previous episodes that have dealt with fandom have been pretty flawed; depicting fan conventions as predominently attended by men, taking snipes at shipping, have the lone fangirl be a mentally unstable, stalker/date-rapist.
But this episode got the fandom terminology right, and there were lots of delicious references to show canon. Robbie Thompson really did his research when he wrote it, and it was celebratory rather than condescending.
And of course, the message is one to die for.
Spoiler: transformative works are OK and also save the day.
I'm really happy that the "landmark"-episode wasn't a gritty, masculine, monster-of-the-week episode like the "true fans" wanted, but something very in tune with what Supernatural fandom actually is like.
And the production values are high!
