Hi. Behind the cut is my latest recs at All_Fandom_Recs@y!g (Join today!) This month it was stories in the Harry Potter fandom.

Hello! I've waded through a couple of dozen of squib fics. Stories that
are set in The Harry Potter universe and center around a squib character
or the squib condition and that either stars canon characters or
original ones. Though many are blatant Mary Sues, I have found several
that are very, very good.

"Cause and Effect" by Magic Gerbil.

This story Stars a multi-dimensional, wonderfully rebellious teenage
OFC. Has a very interesting plotline. Can you say 'political movement'?

Summary: "As a child, Nyssa had unquestioningly accepted the fact that
Bad Things would happen if she revealed that she couldn't do magic.
Mother said so, Father said so, and each successive tutor was quick with
a reminder. Nyssa pouted, of course, and sulked, but never for long; she
wasn't the sulking type. It was only the advent of her teenage years
that led her to rebel against the confines of her life, the confines
that she hadn't fully realized before."

"From Darkness" by Blake.

Summary: "If it were up to my father I wouldn't have a name. But Mother
whispered in my ear before I was pulled from her arms for the last time.
She whispered a single word whose meaning couldn't have been more
suitable for the way my life turned out - Leila. It means darkness.

Father wanted to pass me off as a muggle orphan, but couldn't because I
would be recognised. I may have no magic in my blood but I do possess
the trademarks of my family's line: platinum blonde hair and eyes such a
pale blue they appear silver.

Ah yes. I hear your sound of surprise. Who would believe that the words
Malfoy and squib could be attributed to the same person? Most certainly
not my father."

This story also stars a wonderful, well-rounded OFC. The author does a
good job of describing Leila's thoughts and feelings in a plausible way.
The Malfoy arrogance is there, as is the house elf submissive tendencies
and the jaded insecurities of someone with an abusive childhood. This
story does not center around the past however but starts with Leila's
rescue and finding sanctuary at Hogwarts. Before you start moaning and
sighing about that let me quote the author:

"Just so you know, Leila will not be paired with anybody. This is not a
romance fic. It's just the events of fifth year seen through her eyes,
although her presence my cause some interesting complications. She has
no powers, magical or otherwise, she will not provide the key for
Voldemort's downfall, she will not play matchmaker. She will get to know
the main characters, but only as friends."

"Squibbiness" by Tanny.

Summary: This is an amazing story. Centers completely around, you
guessed it, an OFC called Ellinor Crawley. And yes she is far from a
Mary Sue. Ellinor is a Quidditch "geek", kind of a nerd and of course a
squib. This is a funny and warm story that starts with heartbreak as
eleven year old Ravenclaw fanatic Ellinor has a terrible accident and
discovers the truth that she guessed a long time ago. This is also a
great story for those who don't want to read about parents who lock
their squibchildren in the cellar and throw them breadcrumbs.

"Neither here nor there" by Neva.

This is an extremely well-written story where the teenage squib Original
Character is *male*. Justin is a solitairy, slightly brooding, bookish
young man who lives with his pureblood parents in the Muggle world while
his siblings live in the wizarding world. What's so great about this is
that this is basically a story about ordinary teenage angst and fears of
not fitting in that just happens to be set in a world where magic exists
and strange things happens. Bonus: There´s a mystery! Lucius is in it
and evil!

Summary: "I glance down at her. She's wearing her best robes, red and
purple with fancy trimming. Her hands are on her hips. I know that if
I don't answer soon, she'll leave without me, mutter that I'm being
surly, and Dad will tell her that it's just a phase. I shut my eyes
again for just a moment, then say, "I'll come." Immediately, I want to
take it back, because of the look on her face that shows she thinks the
phase has passed for the time being. It won't pass, I want to tell her.
I can't change what I am."

And of course there’s Ozma’s wonderful stories centering around Argus
Filch. Yes you read it right, Mr. Filch. She gives him depth and a
history but does not paint over the ugly parts. In these stories Argus
is still the mean, nasty person that he is in the books but still has a
heart, memories and a sense of what’s right and wrong. Other characters
that are important in these stories are Snape, Ginny, Neville, Albus,
Minerva and of course Mrs. Norris.

To start off with something short that will also set the tone to the
rest of the stories I suggest you first read “The squib and the
werewolf” which deals with Filch finding a boggart in his office.

Ozma’s stories can be found here, and really I hope you read all of them
for they are wonderful.
