It's not War and Peace
Feb. 22nd, 2008 11:35 pmI hardly ever complain about stuff, but I'm going to make an exception now.
:-)
It's about the fanfiction meta trend.
I really dislike people taking their fanfiction too seriously. Don't get me wrong, I think it's important to be thorough in your writing process, to take time to mull things over, to put your heart and soul into it and have it run through beta readers, but that doesn't mean your story is as complex or clever as some classic piece of literature.
Of course, there is no injury in you thinking it is ;-) as long as you don't act like it.
Writing lengthy Author's Notes where you explain every step of the writing process comes across as very self indulgent to me. I don't care where the author got their inspiration or what message they want their story to send. And if I would care, I'd ask about it in the comments.
Furthermore, if you feel the need to explain what you intended with a scene you have written the story wrong. The fic is supposed to stand on its own.
As for
torchwood_meta, I'm sure the people there are as nice as pie and I have a feeling the main purpose of that community is to give constructive criticism to those who seek it, but I often get the feeling that it's a place for people who want to talk their fics to death and practice intellectual masturbation.
Sometimes, I think the motto "It's just fanfiction" is good to remember.
