In the new landscape for fanfiction, you have to promote your fanfiction by carefully constructed campaigns in order to gain readership. I was complaining about the lack of hits and comments my current story has generated, and one of my Tumblr mutuals asked me what kind of promotion I had done for it.

Promotion? I stared at the screen. "Besides posting?" I wrote, "And sharing the chapters on my Tumblr?"

Yes, she said, you need to do campaigns with graphics or art. "Coming soon" and the story title, or maybe the release date and a teaser. Or maybe a music video!

Today I saw a writer promote her story by counting down the days to the release.

My friend suggested finding a popular fan artist and commissioning a work of fanart next time I write a story. If the art becomes popular, it might generate readership for the fic.

When on earth did it become like this???

We're not professional writers, we're writing for free. We used to be able to post on our LiveJournals and people would find the fic and comment!

I am too old.
