Oscar rant

Not in school, relaxing. Will hopefully finish Scarred which I actually wrote a heck of a lot on this weekend - go me.

About the Oscars:

Too bad about Julianne Moore. She's one of those people I really, really like and didn't win ANY of her Oscars this year. Poor, poor her.

Very cool about so many surprises! Have not seen The Pianist and had never even heard Adrien Brody's name but I think it's cool that an unknown guy won, esp. when he was the only one of the nominees who have never won one! Was a bit miffed when the Swedish commentators started talking about poor Michael Caine who has never won a Leading actor Oscar and should have won it this year as a consolation prize, (he HAS two supporting Oscars but apparently they don't count), and poor poor Jack Nicholson who hasn't won an Oscar in 7 years and really should have won this year as a consolation prize. (Dude, he has three of them!)

I was happy that the LOTR guys won for Gollum, though I'm sad that Andy Serkis wasn't nominated. I was quite pissed that Howard Shore wasn't nominated for the TTT soundtrack since it was far better than the last one. I'm also pissed that the score from Signs wasn't nominated at all. What's up with that?

As for fashion: Salma Hayek and Edward Norton was loveliest, cute couple in cute clothes. Classy and elegant was J.Lo who shock! gasp! didn't show her breasts OR her ass this year! (somehow I think that's refreshing...) Ugliest dress of the whole evening was definitely Cameron Diaz, much like Gwyneth Paltrow's dress last year. And what's with her bangs covering half of her face? Shame on such a pretty lass.

Michael Moore winning Best Documentary - this was probably the most famous winner of this award for a long time. Usually this category gets a big fat so what from people, but because Moore is so famous (and well-loved by most) it was considered a really heavy award this year. About his speech, well I thought he could have done it more subtly with sarcasm and wit. If he had, it probably would have been more efficient. I don't think he was wrong for saying what he did though, simply because the winner has the right to say what the fuck he wants for 45 seconds. A bit of commotion is always fun, and I liked how he brought all the other nominees up with him. I've not seen Bowling for Columbine but a friend says it's good.

Chris Cooper winning - Adaptation has not been released over here so I couldn't say the first thing about his performance. I will say that I genuinely like him after American Beauty and his beautiful performance there. It's always great when an actor who is neither famous nor conceived of as typically "beautiful" wins something like this. Of course it's sad that poor Ed Harris didn't win, but he'll be nominated a billion times before he dies and I'm sure he'll win someday.

When Nic Kidman won, the commentators said that after she got rid of Tom Cruise her career and persona has skyrocketed (!) I thought that was a funny thing to say, perhaps she always stood in his shadow or something.

One of the things I liked a lot was Catherine Zeta Jones (did anyone else notice that Sean Connery, lovely hunk of man meat that he is, called her simply "Catherine"?) accepting an award with a huge belly, and Julianne Moore being nominated for Far from Heaven, a part that she got when she was recently pregnant. It shows that women don't have to choose between having a family and being in a rewarding place professionally. It's just men who are afraid to hire pregnant women, a fear unfounded.

I love that Peter showed up. He was surprisingly coherent, eloquent and articulate! I was expecting him to be drunker, slurring and make outrageous sex jokes! I also expected him to talk about all his dead friends esp. his drinking buddy Richard Harris, and bring along his son so we could see once and for all if the boy is hot or not!

Malin is a huge fan of Roman Polanski. She has his autobiography and calls Frantic and especially Bitter Moon her favourite films. She was happy when he won, though I hadn't realized that it was so unexpected. On Peter's press conference you can hear all the reporters loudly gasp when Polanski's name is called in the monitor. The whole thing stops and Peter goes up to the monitor and stares for about two minutes. It is dead silent. Apparently it was a surprise, and I like surprises.

Coming now to the best and most welcome surprise of the whole night: "Lose yourself" winning the Oscar for best Song. This song is so good, in fact it is definitely the best of all the nominees. It was also refreshing that it won, proving that maybe, maybe the Academy isn't as closed minded as you think. It was a great sadness that Eminem himself wasn't there to except the Award. I would have loved to see his reaction, to hear his speech, to hear him get applause. I also would have loved for him to have performed the song there in the fine salongs. The Oscars sure needed that. It's sad that it was the only song not performed, because it was the best.

All in all, a night full of surprises and unexpected winners -just like it should be.
On oscar.com you can see all the winners' press conferences. I recommend it. Michael Moore's last about twenty minutes!

And P.S. Kathy Bates rocks my world any day.
