Did Sirius die when he fell behind the death veil? I can see no other reason why Lupin would be so sure that Sirius was dead without even checking. Maybe he knew what the veil meant, that if you walked through it you were dead and that's why he knew Sirius had died, not because of the curse hitting him but because he had fallen behind the veil? It's all very vague.
