I didn't fall asleep until 4 am last night because of a tv series we saw last night. It's a new swedish tv-series called the Afflicted ones and the first episode of twelve aired last night. It was an hour and a half long so it was really like a feature film. I got so depressed and scared I couldn't sleep.
It's about these people who are affected by a shockwave that gives them supernatural powers. Darkness and Light, in identical female form, arrives at earth and watches how the afflicted ones deal with their newfound powers. They can't interfere but has to let them choose sides before they contact them.
One of the afflicted ones is a family father who gets the gift of foresight. He tries desperately to prevent the things he sees happen, a girl about to die in cancer, a man about to fall down from a ladder and shatter his knee, a company about to burn up, but the bad things happen anyway, despite his intervention. He starts to see his children and wife being tortured. Blood everywhere, mangled bodies, holocaust. He is given sick leave from his job when he collapses and no one believes him but his brother, who is a young, succesful commitmentphobe without any supernatural powers. He is given sleeping pills but uses them to drug his family's chocolate instead when he sees an image of his wife bloody and screaming his name in pain. He puts his family in their beds and suffocates them one by one. He then goes downstairs, takes his old revolver from a drawer and loads it. Then Light comes in, her eyes full of sympathy. She pleads with him. "I need you. Come with me." But he shakes his head and keeps crying. "It's too late," he says. "I've already seen how it ends." And then he blows his brains out.
Light looks sad as she hears someone coming in to the house. It's the brother, stumbling home drunk. She disappears and he runs around the house, discovering the dead bodies and screaming. And that's how the first episode ended.
It just affected me so much. It was so scary and depressing. The despair and hopelessness he felt to kill his family like that... He absolutely adored his family. And then to have the lead die after the first episode like that is very odd! Especially after you've been convinced for ninety minutes he's to be the main good guy, and since he was the character with the most screen time! Very unexpected. I have a sneaky suspicion though that the main character is actually going to be the brother which is very odd since it wasn't he who was chosen by fate and he's this sort of side character, not at all perfect and not gifted by the Powers, just an average person. Very odd.
