Nov. 28th, 2003 06:45 pmOn Sunday there's the first of Advent - The Christian New Year. At my house it was always kind of big. This time is governed by emotionally pdreparing yourself for the build up to Christmas (preparing yourself for the arrival of it is a whole other thing!) putting up the electric decorations in the windows, unpacking the Advent candle holder (one candle for each Advent) and preparing the gift-calender Malin and I use.
Today at work we didn't have much work to do. I finally got my new desk and though I liked the other location better (and the chair!) I got to put up my pictures and my little plant. I had a nervous giggle attack when trying to explain something to my co workers and had to go to the bath room and calm down.
When I had quit work I took the bus into town to do some shopping for the calender. This weekend is affiliated with a lot of things.
The In & Finn store at the Luna gallery, going to cut my hair for the first time at a store and reading about JKR in a magazine there, Harry Potter and the movie coming out, Christopher Lambert and the Highlander, being knee deep in a Highlander fic about John & Connor. God I loved John MacLoud in that series. It was set in december 2001 and I kept thinking it was happening in real time. The Saturday I went to the hair dresser, bought some gifts for the gift calender at In & Finn and was head over heels in Christopher Lambert and John MacLoud, I dyed my hair using the red and black dye for the first time.
I felt the rush of a Saturday before the excitement begins.
That weekend in 2001 is so connected to the Advent season. I can't believe it's been two years. I keep thinking this wasn't the Saturday before the first of Advent because I know I spent that day at Robert's and Anna-Lena's, being thoroughly stressed out because I was revising my thesis around the clock with a deadline coming up and didn't really have time to spare. So this must have been the Saturday before the second of Advent.
Of course the major thing that affected these days was working on the thesis but I don't miss that.
I didn't feel like going in to town tomorrow so I went today instead. It was fun! I bought some stuff that I needed like cell phone credits and commuter tickets, mittens and new shoelaces for my boots. I also managed to get 10 out of 12 gifts for the calender (plus the one I got yesterday!) That's good! I have two days to find the last one.
Now it all starts. First Advent is on Sunday, we'll see if we go to the traditional market at the local open air museum. I look back at all the years I've lived here, how I faced Christmas respectively in every year. I've been here so long. I feel so sentimental. It's magic. The past, it's magic.
